Me enorgullece decir que nací y me crié en el Centro Sur de Los Angeles. Mis padres emigraron aquí y trabajaron vendiendo en la calle durante la mayor parte de mi vida para darnos a mis cinco hermanos y a mí más oportunidades que las que tuvieron en México. Cuando mi papá quedó discapacitado, empecé a trabajar en un hotel no sindicalizado a los 16 años para ayudar a mi familia. Trabajé allí durante la prepa y la universidad. A los 23 años, justo antes de graduarme de UC Irvine, uno de mis compañeros de trabajo me propuso formar un sindicato. Sabía que si me unía a esta lucha, podrían despedirme y perderiá el dinero que necesitaba para terminar mis estudios. Pero decidí luchar, porque también sabía que era la única manera de que me trataran con dignidad en mi trabajo. Así que me presenté. Aunque muchos de nosotros estábamos asustados, cuando mis compañeros y yo hicimos nuestras demandas, mis jefes reaccionaron haciendo algo que nunca habían hecho antes: nos trataron con respeto. En ese momento me di cuenta de que esto es el poder, de que así se mira cuando lo construimos, y de que eso es lo que quiero hacer el resto de mi vida. Poco después de ser el primero de mi familia en graduarse de la universidad, me uní al movimiento obrero. He sido organizador del sindicato UNITE HERE Local 11 en Los Angeles durante los últimos 15 años, y sé cómo conseguir logros materiales para los trabajadores, los inmigrantes, las personas sin hogar, la gente de color, los jóvenes, todos los que hemos sido abandonados por los funcionarios de nuestra ciudad y los jefes a los que sirven. But throughout it all I’ve never lost sight of the basic fact that anyone can break, and the role of government should be to help. I was the first to sound the alarm at City Hall that homelessness had become a humanitarian crisis. But powerful right-wing actors in our city repeatedly choose a political answer to a human problem. Suing to stop all housing and using law enforcement to push unhoused people out of sight, they’ve only succeeded in wasting money, spreading misery, and kicking the can down the road. For the first time in history, we’re spending more on supportive housing than handcuffs to address homelessness. We’re protecting renters and making public transit fareless and carbon-free. We permanently housed over 200 people on the Venice Boardwalk in just five weeks. But the job isn’t close to done. I want my son to grow up in a city that’s safe and inclusive, with air he can breathe, a home he can afford, and a helping hand reaching out if he needs it. I may be leaving the City Council, but I intend to stay engaged in the fight.
